Last September 22, the IE Center for European Studies organized the seminar titled “Spain and the European Commission“. This was the third one of a series called “Spain: A key player in the European institutions. 30 years of membership in the European Union? ” sponsored by the program “Hablamos de Europa” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Joaquin Almunia, former Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Competition (2009-2014) as well as former European Commissioner for Economy (2004-2009) and Jose Candela former Administrator of the European Commission (1986-2014) were the two speakers.
Joaquin Almunia gave an internal view of the working of the Commission, especially of the college of Commissioners. He also focused on the relations between Commissioners and the European and national administrations.
Jose Candela, one of the first Spanish civil servants of the European Commission, analyzed the relations between Spain and the European Commission throughout the different stages of the development of the institution.
