Seminar “Do the quotas work?: gender equality to review in the European Union”

On Decembre 10, 2012 the Center for European Studies/IE organized a seminar entitled “Do the quotas work?: gender equality in the European Union ” with the participation of Patricia Gabaldon, IE Business School and fellow of the Center for European Studies/IE and Tomás Garicano, Director of Corporate Governance Center.

The seminar begun with the analysis of the draft directive submitted to the Comission by Vice-President Viviane Reding, EU Justice, Human rights and citizenship Commissioner,The proposed Directive sets an objective of a 40% presence of the under-represented sex among non-executive directors of companies listed on stock exchanges. One of the aims of this proposal is to achieve 40% of woman on the board of Directors in 2020.Then Patricia Gabaldon analyzed the situation in different EU countries and how quotas work depending on whether they are sanctioning quotas or quotas called “complain or explain”. Tomas Garicano discussed those points from the Board of Directors perspective.
