Is Europe in Crisis? Diagnosis and Reasons for Hope

On February 25, 2026, the IE Center for European Studies organized a debate entitled: “Is Europe in Crisis? Diagnosis and Reasons for Hope.” The event was moderated by Marie-José Garot, Professor at IE Law School and Director of the IE Center for European Studies.

The following individuals participated as speakers:

Ignacio Gomá Garcés, author of the book “In Search of the Present” and Public Affairs Partner at Kreab Spain; Belén Becerril Atienza, Professor of Public International Law at CEU San Pablo University and Director of International Relations; and Toni Roldán Monés, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at IE University.

Based on the book “In Search of the Present” by Ignacio Gomá, the debate focused on Europe’s loss of direction by the rise of populism, polarization, and the erosion of truth. The speakers analyzed the current state of Europe, the breakdown of the world order, and proposals for Europe’s future.

Finally, the speakers offered a profound and constructive perspective on the challenges Europe is facing today and the paths to restoring trust, civic engagement, and a shared vision.
